The extended edition of The Lord of the Rings gives a much more complete element to the entire development of the story by expanding the characters much more. After viewing the extended version, you may wonder how satisfied you were with the theatrical editions. Characters develop to such a greater degree that you get to know their backgrounds, their “stories” or who they are, and many other scenes that bring such fullness and integrity that you simply cannot get from the unextended original. versions. After watching the extended version, the story makes a lot more sense. Poor Peter Jackson … he must have battled anxiety attacks as he had to cut a lot of shots from the movies to fit in theaters when they were first released.
The first movie, “The Fellowship of the Ring” has an additional thirty minutes of bonus footage included and closes this movie after three and a half hours. The second film, “The two towers” lasts 43 minutes and ends after 3 hours and 42 minutes. The film’s final “grand finale”, “Return of the King,” stretches for a mind-boggling fifty minutes and keeps one literally spellbound in their seats for a chilling finale to Tolkien’s much-loved trilogy. After 4 hours and 11 minutes! Adding it all up, you’ve got eleven hours of masterfully crafted Blu-ray entertainment pleasure to boot. This is by no means imaginative and without other close competition, the greatest trilogy of all time.
But these are the types of epics you get lost in, and if they were 5 or 6 hours long, they would end too quickly and we would wish extended versions of them.
Giving this impressive trilogy 5 out of 5 stars feels like I’m doing it an injustice in some way … IT’S just THAT good!
