Body warmers describe a wide range of heat-emitting products that are not just limited to hot water bottles

Until recent decades, if someone asked you what a body warmer was, you would have probably described it as some kind of hot water bottle. This is mainly due to the fact that, for the last century, hot water bottles have been the most successful and widely used form of alternative heating. Until a few years ago, they actually provided one of the only alternative heating sources. In the 1960s, for example, hot water bottles accounted for just over 85% of alternative heating sales in the UK.

However, as technology has changed, so have the options associated with body warmers. Today, although hot water bottles are still used as efficient sources of heat, they are just one product in a growing range of heaters. In 2010, for example, only around 35% of alternative heating sales in the UK were the result of hot water bottles. This implies a decrease of about 50% in 50 years. This gap has been filled with body warmers that use more advanced technology.

Much of the innovation related to body warmers in recent decades was made possible by the invention and commercialization of the home microwave oven. Heaters using microwave technology are often seed based. These seeds are contained inside the heater. When placed in a microwave, these seeds get hot. After approximately two minutes of microwave heating, the microwave heater is ready for use. The seeds are capable of retaining heat, slowly releasing it to keep its user warm for several hours.

The term body warmer seems pretty generic and that’s because it is. The scope of heaters includes: bed warmers, heated eye masks, neck warmers, foot warmers, microwaveable hot bottles, hot water bottles and other types of hot bottles. There are also a plethora of designs as well. For example, microwave toys that take the form of animals are forms of body warmers. They are very popular with children and adults alike. Intelex’s Cozy Plush range offers a wide variety of around 20 different animals including lions, dinosaurs, sheep, dogs, pandas etc. Other designs may include more traditional patterns, such as Aroma Home’s floral microwavable hot water bottles.

As this article has described, there are many types of body warmers. Modern technology and especially the microwave oven has led to a proliferation of seed-based heaters.
