Music equipment: choose the best

Do you like your music? Whether you store your music on CD, mp3, iPod, phone or any other way, if you want to be in full control and play your music in your car the way you want, you need a stereo. This is a great way to improve the detail and clarity of your music, so you’ll have higher quality bass, mids, and treble compared to your factory-installed stereo. It should be noted, however, that the head units come with a built-in amplifier which, while it may send a cleaner signal to your speakers compared to factory, if you’re looking for loud sound, you’ll need an external amplifier.

However, head units come in a variety of guises, and as a result there are a wide variety of features, but they are all aimed at making your music sound its best, which is why you NEED a head unit. Due to the wide range of features and options that head units have, it can be a daunting task to find the ideal head unit. I know that for me personally, when I started, it was not clear which head unit would be the best fit. my demands, however after much research I have been able to find my ideal stereo solution and I look forward to passing on the knowledge I have found to you. And here comes the big question;

Head units are also known as car stereos. They are used as a means to allow the user control over what is played and at what volume. Most modern head units have a built in CD player for playing CDs and also have the ability to equalize.

The technology used in most aftermarket head units makes a variety of functions available to the end user. There are two sizes that are universal for most cars. Radios of a din or double din. However, there are many reasons why even if someone has the ability to fit a double DIN unit, they may want to add an equalizer to their car audio system to increase the voltage being sent to the amplifiers and thus therefore providing a cleaner signal. I always intended to use an equalizer, however I was able to place my equalizer somewhere that was convenient to use and looked aesthetically pleasing.

However, don’t get me wrong, the stereo systems used in cars like Mercedes Benz and the like are also of high quality and some people don’t want to change their stereo for personal reasons, as with some cars, it is almost impossible, without serious modification to to be able to change a head unit and for those reasons, there are alternative methods to be able to improve the sound quality that we will see later in this blog.

Single DIN head units are half the size of double DIN head units. Due to their confinement of space, they can be used where it is not possible to install a double din. Single DIN units range in price from basic units that offer a CD player to high-end head units that offer more EQ control (control over the different frequencies) and connectivity for amplifiers. There is also the option, if you wish or your budget allows, to get single DIN head units with motorized screens. The benefit of this type of setup would be to have the full functionality of a double DIN head unit but with half the side, and some people think the motorized mechanism looks cool!

double roar; these are twice the size of single DIN units and due to their size; many units are touch screen operated. This allows for additional features, such as satellite navigation, as well as the ability to watch movies and videos, while also including convenience features, such as a reversing camera. Like this Pioneer Double Din head unit that will automatically switch the display to the reversing camera without the need to change anything manually. There are also double DIN head units available without the features of a display and are similar in function to a normal single DIN head unit; however, if your car allows a double-DIN stereo, you can have a full-size stereo. room so you’re not left with a compartment underneath as shown in the image above taken in a Vaxhaul Corsa.

However, for some cars, the standard stereo does not confirm the DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung) standard sizes, the need for a dashboard comes into play. The dashboard will make the car fit to be able to accept standard DIN sizes. These are the little things that will ensure that your car’s audio system not only sounds great, but looks great too. However, if you’re lucky enough not to need an expensive one, your head unit will literally replace the old one.

Alternatives – You may however decide to install a computer in the car, for example, and as a result it is not uncommon to choose to omit a head unit and therefore connect the computer directly to the amplifiers. This method can result in poor sound quality at high volume levels, and as a result, a signal processor can be used not only to control the equalization but also to process the signal, such as the Rockford Fosgate 3.sixty.2 .

The benefit of using this is that the unit will boost the voltage being sent to the amps and, along with the fact that it will process the sound across many EQ bands, it will be ‘cleaner’ and less distortion will be sent, such as playing distortion through through any type of speaker will damage it.

Some people may find that a signal processor like the Rockford Fosgate 3.sixty.2 is not within their budget, they may choose a line signal to RCA adapter. The problem with using this adapter is the quality of the signal being sent to the amplifiers, as the main goal is to send the cleanest signal to the amplifiers, something line to RCA adapters don’t do. Personally I would avoid using an adapter and use a line driver or signal processor if possible.

So what do I need?

Well, after you see what car you have (as this will define what type of head unit you need), you also need to think about what features you want. If you want to have sat nav as well as watch DVDs etc for example but have the space for a double DIN head unit then there is the option of using a single DIN head unit which features a motorized screen. This will offer all the benefits of a double DIN unit but in a single DIN unit.

And now a little in my car. For my car, I had the option of going with a double DIN head unit, whereas this would have looked better; my plan was to install a computer in the car. So I wanted to run a separate display and the only way was to use a single DIN head unit and a single DIN motorized display designed specifically for car computers to make it easy to use the computer functions without the need for a mouse that would be difficult to use while driving.
