NFL QB Rankings Check

Our NFL QB rankings take a season-to-date approach to evaluating the top quarterbacks on the NFL roster. The quarterback position is arguably the most important and consequential position on the football field, and only 16 quarterbacks are consistently good enough to lead their teams to a Super Bowl victory. While there are some definite knockout candidates, the presence of a top-tier quarterback gives teams a significant advantage over the competition.

Baker Mayfield is an excellent value pick for fantasy teams despite his low volume passing offense and lack of rushing upside. His average fantasy output over the past two seasons has been about 15 points per game. Mayfield has yet to reach the 30 pass touchdown mark in three seasons in the NFL. We’re not sold on the slingers yet, but they’ve shown flashes of potential.

Tom Brady: If we had to pick a favorite quarterback for the Super Bowl, it would be Tom Brady. The Patriots quarterback won the title in 2011, but he’s still the most valuable quarterback. He has the highest Win Probability, but is the most expensive player overall. In other words, if you’re not ready for Tom Brady, don’t buy his jersey. If you don’t care about the Patriots, the Packers should consider a quarterback other than Tom Brady.

While there are a handful of first-round picks that deserve higher positions, they’re unlikely to win Super Bowls. The same goes for Jared Goff, who could end up in Detroit next season. Carson Wentz, meanwhile, is expected to be traded to his third team in three seasons. Teddy Bridgewater, on the other hand, is a rookie with only one winning season.

While the Carolina Panthers’ re-signing of Cam Newton is a positive development for the team, the emergence of Tua Tagovailoa is another big story. The former Alabama quarterback has had a difficult rookie season and suffered a serious hip injury in the off-season. But his team has an imposing playmaking group behind him that should help him improve in year two.

Russell Wilson – With a high completion rate and a low success rate, Russell Wilson is a legitimate top-10 candidate. But while his early-season MVP credentials make him a contender, his inflated AYPA and WPA put him outside the top-20. While Murray was not a top-ten fantasy quarterback last season, he’s still one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the NFL.

Josh Allen – With the Bills’ roster built around him, Allen is arguably the best player in the AFC East. Allen is physically gifted, boasts the strongest arm in the NFL, and is willing to take a beating from defenses. With his age, physical gifts, and willingness to take a hit, Allen should be ranked first in NFL QB rankings. If he continues to develop like this, he could end up a Hall-of-Famer candidate.

Kyler Murray – The Arizona Cardinals’ offense has been frustrating to watch, but Murray has made a strong showing and jumped to QB5 in our QB rankings in his second season. With the addition of Rondale Moore and A.J. Green, Murray will have a solid fantasy value for a few years to come. In the meantime, he’s a viable backup in a deep playoff race.
