What are pay stubs used for?

A paycheck stub refers to the part of the paycheck that workers can keep after they have deposited the paycheck received by them. The usual information it contains is the amount paid, some personal information about the worker for the payer’s use, and a running computation of earnings for the entire year or for the duration of the worker’s employment. Most commonly, the pay stub provides detailed information on deductions made for insurance benefits, taxes, retirement plans, and similar features that could affect workers’ wages.

Paychecks generally represent the payment that an employer makes to its employees. It functions as a record keeping system to allow the employer and employee to keep perfect track of wages or other benefits paid from time to time. A paycheck stub is a document that is usually attached to the paycheck to give details about the payment made to the employee. The design and information contained in paychecks can vary by employer, but certain features are common.

The most common information contained in a paycheck is the employee’s name, the employee’s Social Security Number, or another identifier provided by the employer. It usually has a unique number for each employee for internal record keeping purposes, as well as the name and address of the employer. The stubs would also specify the purpose for making the payment, the time for which it is made, and a breakdown of the amount, if the worker is paid by the hour. The paycheck stub may also show the total amount paid over a period of one year or even longer.

It is recommended that you keep your pay stubs until you file your annual tax return. In general, tax experts suggest that one keep a record of the taxes paid for the last seven years.

It is imperative to properly dispose of pay stubs with the help of a shredder, as they can be used to collect important personal information such as date of birth and social security number.
