Women – How to break the glass ceiling

Have you tried unsuccessfully to move up in your career? Do you feel that the men of your company are promoted and you are left behind? If this sounds like you, have you considered a non-traditional career? Consider a career where less than 25% of the workforce in a specific occupation is made up of women.

What jobs are non-traditional?

Non-traditional jobs for women include: architect, carpenter, chemist, taxi driver, and president of the United States. There are more than 100 occupations that are considered non-traditional. Just look around you, you can probably determine for yourself which jobs are non-traditional.

Why do women not consider

Stereotypes still exist about what is considered “women’s work”. These stereotypes are ingrained in our society and are passed down from our parents and continue through our school teachers and counselors. Little girls rarely get gifts like a truck, Lincoln logs, or a toy chemist’s set. Teachers and counselors tend to steer girls toward “pink-collar” classes and jobs. With little guidance and exposure to ALL of our career options, it is surprising that there are women in non-traditional careers.

Higher wages and higher needs

Many non-traditional jobs pay 20-30% more (and many more) than traditional jobs and have better benefits and career advancement opportunities. In many trades, 45% to 70% of workers age 45 and older are expected to leave their occupation by 2008, according to the US Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. These positions will need to be filled. If you’re interested in working as a carpenter or welder, take a look at a job in the trades.

Money is often not the only determining factor in finding a fulfilling career. A job where you can use your skills and interests is probably a top priority, too. Take a look at your skills and interests; Do any of the non-traditional careers fit the bill?
