A Guide to Pendant Lights for Your Home

Pendant lights are a great way to add a spark of light to your home, whether they’re inside or outside. A small addition of pendant lighting can make a big difference in the appearance of the room. Pendant lights come in many different styles, from contemporary styles to traditional styles. Of course, the type of lighting fixture you choose is just a matter of preference.

If your home is modern, you’ll probably end up with a beautiful stainless steel or brass finish pendant. I’ve seen some amazing contemporary designs, specifically the way glass or steel is cut.

If you’re looking for a more traditional feel, then you’re probably interested in Tiffany-style pendant lights. This style is done with stained glass and is usually extremely decorative. The splash of color from Tiffany lights can really make a difference to the style of the room they are placed in.

Pendant lights can be placed in a wide variety of places throughout the house. They can also add a beautiful touch outside the house at the front door. I will discuss some common places to install these lights throughout this article.

They are most commonly found in the kitchen on the kitchen table or hanging over the breakfast bar. Island-style pendants are very common for a kitchen. This is when more than one light will hang from a center piece symmetrically.

They are also found in the game room, perhaps on a pool table. If they are on a card table, they can hang a little lower than in a kitchen. Just as if it were installed in a workspace. You want enough light from the pendants, so they should be installed closer to the table.

If you are thinking of hanging these lights above a table or counter, the general rule of thumb is to make sure they hang at least 30″ – 40″ above the surface. Before final installation, be sure to test the height. If someone is sitting at the table, you should never get in their way.
