All about drinks

A drink is any beverage, hot or cold, that quenches, refreshes, or stimulates thirst. The body needs fluids to help regulate body processes and maintain good health. A large amount of water is lost from the body through perspiration and this must be replaced.

There are three main classes of drinks: –

1. Refreshing drinks. These quench your thirst and include all fruit juices, spirits, and sparkling water. All soft drinks contain carbohydrates in the form of sugar, while those made with fresh fruit also contain vitamin C and mineral salt.

2. Nutritious drinks. These drinks can be used as food when you are hungry. In fact, they are used as food for the young, the sick and the elderly who cannot eat solid food. All drinks that contain milk are included and provide nutrients to the body in the form of vitamins, mineral salts, proteins, fats and carbohydrates.

3. Stimulating drinks. These contain very little nutritional value, except for a small amount of carbohydrates in the form of sugar, if sugar has been added to them. These include tea and coffee that contain stimulant substances that young children should not drink in excess.

Milk is one of the most important foods for everyone, especially very young children, growing children, pregnant women, and the elderly. It contains proteins and mineral salts that are very necessary for growth. Milk is rich in a mineral salt called calcium that is necessary for building strong bones and teeth. Milk also contains vitamins, carbohydrates, and fats, making it good for young and growing children.

There are many types of milk, but the most used is cow’s milk, although milk from other animals is also used, such as goat and buffalo milk.

Cow’s milk can be purchased as; –

1. Fresh milk.

2. Condensed milk: part of the water in the milk has evaporated, sugar has been added and the milk is canned.

3. Evaporated milk: some of the water in the milk has evaporated before canning.

4. Powdered milk: all the water in the milk has evaporated, leaving only the solids in powder form.

Clean milk can only be obtained from clean and healthy cows, raised in clean, well-cared for environments and milked under very hygienic conditions. Milk is a complete food for babies but it is also a very good breeding ground for germs. Germs grow and multiply very quickly in milk. Many of the bacteria found in milk are harmless, but they make the milk bitter.

Sometimes milk carries germs that carry disease. These disease germs can enter the milk from the cow’s body, from flies, dirty utensils, dirty hands, and airborne dust. Therefore, it is very important that the milk is always kept very clean and covered at all times.

To preserve the milk: –

1. Blanch all fresh milk to kill germs. To scald the milk, bring it quickly to a boil, boil for three minutes, and then cool quickly. Blanching will keep the milk better.

2. Store the husked milk in clean containers, cover it with a piece of clean muslin and keep it in a cool place, either in a refrigerator or in a clay container with cold water.

3. Never leave condensed milk in the open can. Always empty the contents into clean, dry containers and keep the milk covered to prevent the entry of dust and germs.

4. Always empty and clean all milk containers before refilling with fresh milk. Never add fresh milk to old milk.

To reconstitute the milk: –

2 tablespoons powdered milk

1 pint of water

1. Measure the water into a mixing bowl.

2. Sprinkle powdered milk in the water.

3. Beat with a rotary beater or fork until milk is free of lumps.

Cocoa is not only a stimulating drink, it is also a nutritious drink. It contains starch and fat and when it is made with milk and sugar it contains a lot of nutritional value. Cocoa is made from cocoa beans, the seeds of the cocoa pods that are the fruit of the cocoa tree grown in many parts of tropical Africa, South America and the West Indies, Ceylon, and Java. The cocoa beans are roasted and then ground. The cocoa fat called cocoa butter is then removed, after which the cocoa is ground and sifted into a very fine powder. Tea is made from the dried buds or leaves of the tea bush that grows very well on the slopes of India and Ceylon, Malaysia, China and Japan.

The best quality tea has only the buds of the bush that are well curled when dried and contain no stem, flowers or powder. The quality of the coffee depends on the roasting of the beans and their freshness. Ground coffee does not keep well, loses its flavor and absorbs other flavors.
