Apple’s iPhone: superphone or super hype?

Apple’s iPhone, super phone or super hype? Is this cell phone really the complete package that Apple purports to be or is it all hype? Let’s take a look at the facts and fiction about Apple’s iPhone to see how it really stacks up against the hype.

Ease of use, this is what Apple shows in all its advertising. At this point, they hit the spot. The Apple iPhone is extremely easy to use. If you can touch something with your finger or slide your finger across a screen, you can use iPhone without difficulty. For ease of use, the iPhone is a great phone.

Listening and music storage. As far as sound quality goes, the iPhone is great. A good quality set of stereo headphones is required to enjoy iPhone sound quality. To complete the exclusive look of the iPhone, a set of Bluetooth stereo headphones may be required. In the category of sound quality and music playback capabilities, the iPhone is a great phone.

Storage is another feature that Apple touts on the iPhone. At 6GB, 8GB, and now 16GB, that seems like a huge amount of storage. This is where the downside is, you cannot upgrade memory or use external memory like memory cards or USB sticks. Therefore, you are limited by the amount of content you can have on your iPhone. You cannot take content with you. One solution could be to store content on an Internet site and exchange it whenever you want. Any teenager I know can get through even 16 GB of music in a surprisingly short period of time. If you add videos and TV shows, 16 GB fills up pretty quickly. In the storage department, Apple’s iPhone gets hype instead of a super phone.

What about battery life. This is where there’s no hype: Apple actually has very little to say about the iPhone’s battery. Here’s why. You can’t change it. Most mobile phones have a removable battery. This way, if it dies, you trade it in for a new one. The iPhone lacks this capability. Once the battery dies and no longer holds a charge, you’ll need a new phone. The reason why Apple is so concerned about the battery is probably due to the current litigation surrounding this. Is this hype or super phone? Neither. The battery issue definitely doesn’t qualify it as a super phone. Apple has said very little, so there’s really no hype involved. Maybe we should categorize this as buyers beware.

What about that touch screen? This is where you see the most hyped Apple iPhone. Is this super phone or hype? The touch screen is super sensitive. If your phone bumps into something in your pocket, or bumps into something while getting in and out of your car, you may end up calling people or making your iPhone do something weird. The touch screen allows you to easily manipulate the iPhone. Overall, the touch screen classifies this as a great phone, not over the top. Just be careful with it.

Next there is internet access. Every commercial for Apple’s iPhone shows it to be a great phone when it comes to Internet access. You can use any WiFi to contact friends on Facebook or watch content on YouTube. Well, the browser needs better search capabilities. This is one area where the iPhone is lacking. Another is that the iPhone browser does not store the password. This was probably a security feature that Apple built in. Personally, it’s better if you don’t store your passwords. In general, WiFi networks are not secure and you do not want your banking login information to be available to the public. Is this super phone or hyper. I’ll give you a super phone on this one, though it’s no different than any other smartphone out there.

Apple’s iPhone, great phone or hype? It looks like it comes out as a great phone. Especially if you want the music and internet capabilities.
