Introduction

Beckenham is a small town within the London Borough of Bromley, in England. Beckenham was initially referred to as Bacheham, however the name Beckenham derives from Beohha’s Homestead or Farmhouse, which is also known as Beohhan-ham in Old English. The River Beck which runs through this area is named after Beckenham. This city has remained an important city until the introduction of railways and the Crystal Palace. John Cator, the person behind the transformation of a small town into a major city in the 17th century. ST George’s Church, located in the heart of Beckenham, has a 13th century lichgate which is said to be one of the oldest lichgates in England.

Beckenham also has some major landmarks that are quite famous including the Chinese Garage, Kelsey Park, South Norwood Country Park, Croydon Road Recreation Ground, Beckenham Place Park, St George’s Parish Church, and Beckenham Crematorium.

South Norwood Country Park

South Norwood Country Park is located near Elmer’s End railway station in South Norwood, in the Borough of Croydon. Spread over 50 hectares of parkland, this park was opened in the year 1989. This area was previously used for sawmill farms that provided for the developing population of London. The Croydon Sports Arena, which is the home of Croydon Football Club, is situated at the southern end of this park. There’s even a visitor center and parking lot that hosts annual open houses that include guided tours, bowling, refreshments, bar turns demonstration, and face painting to raise awareness of this park.

Kelsey Park

Kelsey Park is one of the largest parks located in the town of Beckenham in the Bromley district of South London. There is a memorial tree that was planted in October 1007 in this park and is dedicated to Ben Hitchcock who was assassinated on June 23, 2007. There is a college in Beckenham which is usually named after Kelsey Park.

Croydon Road Recreation Ground

Croydon Road Recreation Ground is said to be a public park situated in Beckenham, in the Borough of Bromley. This public park is right next to one of the famous Beckenham Hospitals and has a bandstand, a bowling alley, a café and a few other facilities. In 1902, the first UK airmail flight left this park and traveled to Calais in a hot air balloon.

Chinese Garage Building is a garage and was previously used as a gas station. This garage is located near Kelsey Park in the Bromley district. Designed by Edmund Clarke and built in 1928, this Chinese garage building is actually in the style of a Japanese pagoda. This garage received the award for one of the best gas stations in 1939 organized by the Daily Express.
