A great home improvement project for anyone, especially a DIY woodworking beginner, is hanging shelves.

You can put sturdy shelves in your garage or shed. They can hold many of your tools. That way, you can easily find the tools you need.

In addition, you can hang decorative shelves in any room of the house. There are numerous options today for a variety of shelves.

You can have glass shelves and all wooden shelves, you can also use cheaper materials and paint them to match any room in the house.

I’ve put together a list of tools you’ll need to build your own shelves. I also wanted to explain about the many types of brackets and shelving materials that are available.

The most important lesson in hanging shelves, use the right material for whatever purpose your shelves will be used for.

If you’re putting up your shelves in the garage to store heavy items like tools or paint cans, it’s important to use the correct materials and also how to anchor your shelves for the most strength.

Each type of rack has a different weight limit; therefore, it is important to use the correct brackets for whatever application you are using your shelves for.

When choosing stationary stands, you can select from highly decorative to heavy duty.

For the supports that offer the best strength for your shelves, select those with diagonal supports.

Tips for Hanging Shelves

To start, attach the longer bracket to the wall and the shorter arm to the shelf. When possible, you should always anchor the brackets directly to the wall studs. This makes the shelves much stronger.

If you have to anchor brackets between studs, always use mollies and toggle bolts. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s weight limits when using mollies and bolts.

If you are attaching the shelves to a concrete or brick wall, use only masonry anchors to attach the shelf supports.

One more important piece of advice when putting up your shelves is that you want to minimize any sagging. The best way to prevent the shelves from sagging is to mount the brackets at least 6″ (inches) from the ends of the shelves.
