Essential facts to understand when it comes to the Boston Terrier

The Boston Terrier (also called the “American Gentleman”) is a non-sporting breed. They have brindle, seal or black fur with white markings. The breed is supposed to have first originated during the 1800s and acting as a show dog is what they were initially used for. They are now a more common choice as a companion breed for families or allergy sufferers today. Qualities like their playful and polite temperament are things they are famous for. They are known to have developed in Boston and are descendants of the English terriers, bulldog and French bulldog.

They are identified as a small sized dog. The official male and female dimensions are 15 to 17 inches tall with a weight of 15 to 25 pounds. They are famous for their friendly, gentle and polite manner. They are not suitable as guard dogs, as they are usually reserved (but quickly become friendly) with strangers. Compared to any other breed, they are known to be quite intelligent, scoring a 54 when taught new obedience instructions.

They are great with children, and that may mean they are suitable as a family pet. They get along well with other pets such as other dogs and pets. A simple task is to groom them. They require thorough grooming every one to two months, and occasional brushing once a week or so. They can adapt very easily to living in an apartment, but they like to have a small yard (although they don’t really need it) to run around.

They are mostly long-lived, like a good number of small breeds, with a life expectancy of 10-14 years. Their most common health problem is cataracts or other eye problems, and they are also susceptible to deafness, breathing difficulties, sensitivity to hot and cold, or allergies. Hobbies like play sessions or indoor games of fetch will keep them entertained. They require long walks every day to prevent the development of bad behaviors due to their moderate to high energy level.

You must be ready to give them plenty of exercise and attention if you choose the Boston Terrier. They are not the best choice for a guard dog, but they are perfect for active owners, apartment dwellers, or families. Possibly the main reason dog lovers find this dog particularly appealing is that he makes one of the best companion dogs due to his incredibly gentle nature. People also love to see them as they can be a great option for dog allergies due to their hypoallergenic fur.
