Hosting a Murder Mystery: Game or Party?
So you’d like to host a murder mystery event, but don’t really know where to start. Here are some basic tips and ideas to get you started and point you in the right direction.
The first thing you will need is to cover the 3 P’s:
1) Product: what type of event would you like to organize? Play? A game?
2) Venue: where can you hold your event?
3) People: who will help you and participate?
Deciding what type of event you want to host will help narrow down your options. If you want to host the Murder Mystery Play, you’ll need a good-sized venue and more people to perform. If you want to host a Mystery game, you can do it in your own home or find a small venue that doesn’t require a lot of extra people helping you.
Host a Murder Mystery Play
You can find many resources for scripts online. One site is Play-dead.com. It is very easy to buy the rights to perform a work.
Of course, a play will require a group of people, such as actors, a director, costumes, and props. If you don’t have a theater group, here are some ideas:
If you don’t want to put on a play yourself, you can find groups online that provide their own acting company and Murder Mystery Plays.
Host a murder mystery game
You can find mystery games online that come in all shapes and sizes. Some are set for dinners with elaborate plots that include kits with all the necessary material. Others are very simple with a set of rules and a basic plot. Most Murder Mystery games involve everyone, just like RPGs. You won’t need any stage performers, just you and your guests.
You can find Murder Mystery Party Games with a quick search online.
Find a place
If you prefer a more theatrical Murder Mystery or don’t want to host a game at home, you’ll need to find a venue. Finding a place is not really difficult. My home group began by performing Mysteries at a local Historic Mansion, moved to a Community Center, and eventually found a home at the Banquet Facility. Many popular murder mysteries are based on a Dinner Theater setting. The idea of a dinner and show is very attractive to the public.
Place ideas:
If you decide to start your own theater company, you will of course need a place to rehearse the play. If he has secured a location that will allow him to perform the show, he may be allowed to rehearse there as well. If not, there’s nothing wrong with a good basement or garage. My local group spent years rehearsing on bases.
promote yourself
Local newspapers have calendar sections strictly for auditions and theater performances. Smaller local newspapers and publications are always looking for interesting stories, so give the paper a call and see if they would like to do a story. If you have a website, blog, Myspace or Facebook page, by all means promote your performance.
Extra Bonus Idea Contact local businesses in your area to see if they would like to purchase an ad on your show. Leave a few pages fee in your program for your purpose. Selling ads will generate additional income. Another idea is to see if businesses would like to donate items, giveaways, coupons, etc. as prizes for their play. At the end of the evening, whoever guesses the “killer” will receive a prize from a local business, plus this business gets a free promotional cap. Hopefully these tips will get you started in the wonderful world of Murder Mystery Hosting!
