How far is a 5K race?

Running a 5K is becoming a very common goal for many beginning runners, it seems to be an easy thing to imagine and for a complete novice not too daunting a prospect.

It’s a distance that, with some consistent training, most people could run non-stop in just 6-8 weeks.

Many charity events and road races now use this specific distance as it is a good starting point for most people and you don’t have to be an elite athlete or gym addict to contemplate doing one.

But exactly how far is 5k.

Well, in a nutshell, it’s 3.1 miles.

Depending on whether you’re viewing the distance as a metric system or the old imperial system.

If you want the answer in kilometers, in a distance of 5 kilometers there are 5000 meters or 16,404 feet

If you want the answer in miles, there are 5,469 yards in a distance of 3 miles.

As a relatively unfit beginner, you should expect to be able to complete this distance in around 35-40 minutes. Although this would very much be a starting point and anyone at a basic level of fitness and not overweight could run much faster than this.

5k races have become a very popular way for charities to build both funds and awareness for their individual causes. Many people decide to choose charities that are of particular importance to them, for example they may have lost a relative or friend to a certain illness or know someone who is battling an illness that is supported by that particular charity.

5k races are the shortest distances for beginners to participate in, but you still need to be fully prepared if you’re going to put your best foot forward. The truth is that most people are physically capable of running a 5K, but they don’t simply because they don’t receive the proper training advice.

If you’ve often wondered how much a 5k is and are thinking of running one, then you should stick to a program that’s really designed for your fitness level. There’s nothing worse than following a workout regimen that’s too advanced for you because it’s demotivating and soul-wrecking trying to keep up with a workout plan that’s too difficult to complete.
