How to introduce your pet to your new baby

Children love pets, and with good reason. Pets can provide a child with much-needed companionship and unconditional love. Pets teach children lasting lessons about responsibility and caring for other living things.

If you already have a pet, such as a dog or cat, remember that the pet used to get the most attention and may be jealous when a new baby arrives. The pet may attack the baby and her general mood may change. So what should parents do to keep their pet happy when the baby arrives? And how should they protect their baby from their pet?

– Animals like routines. Try to keep your pet’s routine the same as it was before the baby came.

– Be sure to spend quality one-on-one time with your pet.

– Get a box for your pet to hide in while it is in the house.

– Choose a specific room where you can play with your pet.

– Before your baby is born, it is important that you teach your pet not to enter the baby’s room.

– Before the baby comes home from the hospital, send home a garment that the baby has worn so that your pet gets used to the little one.

– Never leave your pet alone with the baby.

– Take your pet to the vet for a routine health exam and any necessary vaccinations.

– If your pet shows fear and anxiety, seek help from an animal behavior specialist.

Many pets are very tolerant of young children, but it’s still important to be aware of potential dangers and take precautions to avoid them. No matter how well you plan ahead, adding a new member to the family can be difficult, so it’s understandable if your pet feels like an outsider.

Many animals are sent to new homes or animal shelters when a baby arrives. You can make it easier for your pet to cope with the introduction of the new member of the family. Don’t give up, having a pet is good for your baby. Let your child share some of the pet care responsibilities. With proper training, your new baby and pet should be able to live together safely and happily.
