How to prevent your Shih Tzu from biting

Train your puppy to stop biting

Your training should begin as soon as your puppy is 6 weeks old to prevent him from becoming an aggressive Shih Tzu. When he bites, he gives a high-pitched alarm to express that you’re hurt, such as… “ouch!” Or not!” He will learn to associate your reaction with his behavior and will be more careful the next time you play with him.

Don’t make the mistake of letting your pup grow up with this habit thinking that biting is just dog’s play. The truth is… the pup is unconsciously honing his biting power to be ready to assume the position when the situation calls for it. So the time to train your Shih Tzu to stop biting is when he is in his first few months of life. A year may be a bit late!

Be consistent in your anti-bite training. “Oh!” repeated or not!” every time he enters

no matter how light or hard the bite, it will teach him that biting of any kind is not acceptable. Giving a toy is another way to show a puppy that it can chew on it but not your hand. Once you get what you want from your puppy, it’s time to praise him to reinforce his good behavior. If you’re still having trouble with your Shih Tzu biting, why not get him a professional obedience trainer?

Does your Shih Tzu still bite at one year of age?

If the biting and nipping behaviors are not stopped early in the puppy’s life, it will continue to play biting until it is one year old. As a dog owner, he should be aware that playing with his Shih Tzu encourages a domineering attitude that includes biting.

This is the right time to set limits for your dog. Prevents him from having freedom throughout the house. Crate training is one form, albeit a little more difficult at the age of 1. Good obedience training will help prevent your dog from growing up to be an aggressive Shih Tzu that bites.

If your dog still bites when he is older

If the biting behavior continues when your Shih Tzu becomes an adult dog, he must not have received good and persistent obedience training and wants to assert himself as the dominant power in the home. It might even turn on you!

The ultimate solution if training your Shih Tzu puppy fails (it will only fail if you have been inconsistent as pack leader) is to get professional help to prevent imminent danger of attack.

Whether your dog grows up to be well-behaved or one that bites is your decision. Remember that a dog is man’s best friend… if and only if you made him one.
