Should I have windows in my dog house that I am building?

I have to admit, I’m a do-it-yourselfer. I like to build just about everything from sheds to dog houses to platform beds. On my last project to build a dog house, I had to ask myself the question, should I have windows in the dog house I’m building? Sheds have windows, real houses have windows, but do dog houses need windows?

I started searching the internet for some reliable dog house plans. I also did some research to find out why most dog houses don’t have windows. This is what I came up with. First of all, even dogs like to look out the window when they are inside their house, most of the time, because they want to go out and chase a bird or a squirrel. Or maybe they just want to go out and snoop around. If they’re in a dog house, they can just walk out of the house and into the yard without you letting them out.

Second, if your dog’s house has windows, the chances of them staying clean are close to zero. Your dog’s nose will be all over the window and dirty in no time at all, which means he won’t have a window to look out anymore.

Now, the most important reasons why dog houses don’t have windows. They just don’t do as good a job of keeping heat in as a solid insulated wall. Also, during the summer they let in too much heat and the house will no longer stay as cool as you would like. There are a few things you can do to help with this, particularly the placement of the dog house in your yard. You can place it near a fence, near your house, or under a large tree. This will also help.

You can of course use your dog door as a window for your dog house. These clear plastic doors will help keep out the elements and give your dog a place to keep an eye on if he wants to. If you are building your own house for your dog, I recommend building an insulated dog house that is easy to clean. I would have the roof or one of the walls open so you can easily clean your dog house from time to time. You may also want to invest in a den bed during the winter months or add a heater to keep your dog warm enough.
