Smoothies and their origins

Smoothies are cold, mixed drinks that are typically made with a combination of fresh fruit, crushed ice, frozen fruit, and fruit or vegetable juices. A banana is often included to give it a thicker texture. Today frozen yogurt, sherbet or sherbet is also used as part of the base for the same purpose.

Shakes generally do not contain ice cream, as it is the base for milk shakes. Pureed fruit drinks based on Brazilian originals were first sold in health food stores on the West Coast of the United States in the 1930s, but it wasn’t until the 1940s that Waring “Blendor” cookbooks they started publishing recipes for a “banana smoothie” and a “pineapple softener.” This name was later adopted by books, magazines, and newspapers to refer to any smooth product made in blenders.

In fact, modern smoothies with their frozen yogurt and fruit base are more similar in terms of components to Indian lassis than to Brazilian fruit juices.

However, it was not until the 1960s that, with the resurgence of macrobiotic vegetarianism in the United States, smoothies began to become popular. These early shakes were essentially a mixture of fruit, fruit juice, and ice. In the 1970s frozen milk was added to the mix to create a “fruit smoothie.” These smoothies were served at local health food restaurants and health food stores, along with tofu, fruits, carob beans, and other healthy foods.

In the early 1970s, smoothies were marketed when chains like Smoothie King began selling mixed fruit drinks under the name “smoothies.”

Blackberry smoothie

Ingredients:
180 ml apple juice
125 ml of natural yogurt
220 g frozen blackberries
1 banana

Method:
Combine the fruit in a blender. Pour the yogurt on top and then process until smooth. Pour into a chilled glass and serve.

Blueberry smoothie

Ingredients:
300g frozen blueberries, slightly thawed
250g vanilla yogurt
180 ml milk
360 ml pineapple juice
3 tablespoons of liquid honey
15 ice cubes

Method:
Combine the blueberries, vanilla yogurt, milk, pineapple juice, and honey in a blender and process on high speed until smooth. With the blender still running, add about 3 ice cubes at a time until all the ice cubes have been added and divided into the smoothie. Continue beating until smooth, then divide among four glasses and serve immediately.
