Receiving a gift is great. But giving one is better. That’s what they say. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. You want to give a gift, but you want to give something that they want and will like. After all, seeing an ecstatic face feels better than seeing “will you tell me this?” expensive. This year, there are some hot trends in the computer section. I’m going to briefly touch on this area a little bit.

electronic reader: Let’s start with the eReader. This is a great device for reading well. Its main use is to read books and newspapers. It’s small, slim and lightweight, making it easy to carry around. Some feature wireless connectivity to connect to Wi-Fi or your cellular provider so you can download content anywhere. The screen is all black and white. It uses a technology that does not tire the eyes. It is as if you were reading a book or a newspaper. It’s great for reading outdoors as there are no reflections. Again, like reading a book or a newspaper. Before you jump in and get this as a gift, does that person really want it? The first question would be, does the person read? The next question would be, is this too “untechnical”? If the gift is for someone with a background in technology, this may not be the one.

tablets: Well, the next step is tablets. These are like e-readers with much more power and functionality. To name a few, you can play games, it’s a touchscreen, and it’s in color. These use LCD/LED to output the content. However, it is difficult to read outside in the sun as there can be a lot of glare. Like the eReader, some have the ability to connect to Wi-Fi or your cell phone provider so you can download content on the go. Since the debut of the iPad, there is an expectation that more of these devices will come. Before you jump in and get this as a gift, is this enough power for the person? Tablets are great for consuming content like browsing the internet, watching movies, and playing games, among other things. But they are not good at creating things.

Laptop: Well, the next step is laptops. Basically, this is a complete computer. Laptops these days are extremely powerful. In fact, most already replace desktop computers. And these allow you to be mobile and always connected to a Wi-Fi or your cellular provider. Since prices have come down significantly, almost everyone can afford one in one form or another.
