Types of wood

Different types of wood are used to make furniture. The quality and resistance of the furniture depends on the types of wood used. The different colors and textures of wood bring beauty and style to home and office furniture.

Different types of wood:

There are several types of woods, which are used throughout the world in the manufacture of all types of furniture. Mainly, the types of wood for furniture can be classified into two parts: soft woods and hard woods.

Soft woods:

Pine: Pine grows primarily in the northern hemisphere region, where its more than 100 types of wood species are found.

Color: white or pale yellow

Properties: soft and light wood

Uses: in the elaboration of country or provincial furniture.

Redwood: Redwood trees grow in the Pacific region of the United States.

Red color

Properties: Resistant to deterioration by humidity, sunlight and insects.

Uses: in the elaboration of outdoor furniture and decorative carvings.

Cedar – Several species of cedar grow in the southern United States, Central and South America.

Color: red-brown

Properties: soft, light, moth repellent, aromatic.

Uses: in the elaboration of drawers, boxes, cases and storage cabinets.

Hemlock: There are about 10 species of hemlock, of which four species grow in North America and four to six in East Asia.

Color: black, brown

Properties: Light, smooth, with a uniform texture and not resinous.

Uses: in the manufacture of planks, doors, wood, boards, panels, boxes and subfloors.

Hard woods:

Oak: Oak grows primarily in the United States, where more than 60 types of wood species are found.

Color: red and white (red oak species is also known as black oak)

Properties: Heavy wood, light and strong in color.

Uses: in the elaboration of designs of American and English countries, elaboration of transitional and contemporary pieces.

Maple: Maple grows primarily in the United States, where more than 115 species are found.

Properties: Very hard and shock resistant, in which the bird’s eye figure, leaf figure and knots are found.

Uses: In the making of American colonial furniture, ranging from the mid to low price category.

Cherry – Also known as fruit wood, these types of wood grow in the eastern half of the United States.

Color: Light brown and reddish brown.

Properties: Moderately hard, easy to polish and carve, resistant to deformation.

Uses: in the elaboration of British colonial furniture of the 18th century and in the elaboration of French provincial designs.

Ash: Ash grows primarily in the eastern United States, where its 16 types of wood species are found.

Color: white, black, blue, green and light brown.

Properties: Hard, heavy with a twisted and interwoven figure.

Uses: In the manufacture of furniture and structural frames bent to steam.
