When should I strip or sand the cabinet doors?

Anytime someone is working on a cabinet, whether old or new, I usually hear this question: should I remove or sand the cabinet doors? Sanding and stripping are two different tasks, especially when it comes to furniture like the cabinet. There are several things that need to be considered when taking either option.

Renewal is the alternative to buying a new product. It is achieved by changing the cover or outer part of a thing. It can also be done by adding more accents or reducing the accents. Renovation is generally used when defining a house. It can also be applied to furniture such as the wardrobe.

For those people who want to compensate with a different look for their rooms but don’t have a budget, they can resort to room renovations. This is done in many ways. One is by changing the design or style of the room. This is easy because there are so many styles to choose from. From a messy looking room, you can switch to a minimalist look; or if it used to be an all-pink room, you can reinvent it into a black and white room. Instead of buying new furniture, you can simply give the items in the room a new look.

The easiest and most common piece of furniture is the cabinet. You can start the renovation from here. For starters, you can sand or remove the cabinet doors to give it a different look. To begin with, you need to take out all the items inside the cabinet. You should also be able to remove all hardware such as finger pulls, bolts and locks etc. After removing them, you can now start cleaning the cabinet parts. Start at the front area going to the back. Be sure to include the edges and corners of the cabinet as well. Do not leave dirt or any holes from the spaces where the hardware was removed. To fill the gaps you can use wood putty or any of its type. Be careful when putting these things. Wipe down the area from time to time to avoid staining the cabinet. Let the putty dry. It dries more easily if allowed to air dry in the sun. After it has been air dried, you can now smooth the cabinet with the use of a fine sandpaper. You should sand down all sides or areas where the wood putty was placed.

If the cabinet door has multiple trims, you need to remove them from the doors. This is usually done after the cabinet hardware has been removed. To make removing the decorations easier, there is a chemical you can use. This chemical is available in grocery stores and is friendly to the environment. After removing the cabinet doors, you can now apply the wood filler to fill any gaps or holes that were also created during the process.

After sanding or stripping the cabinet doors, you can now move on to the next step, which is painting the cabinet door. Use colors that complement your new theme. Another option is to add another set of trims to your cabinet to create a whole new look.

To answer your question, whether I should remove or sand the cabinet doors will depend on the condition of your cabinet doors. If it needs to be smoothed, sand it down; if it has other designs or embellishments, then remove it.
