A Maui Tanning Adventure Guide

The majestic coastlines and breathtaking scenery make Maui the best place on the planet to sunbathe. Maui offers a variety of cozy places that are nothing short of a sun-worshiper’s paradise. Each coast offers something different. If you are a fan of fun, craving crowds and action, or a sun worshiper looking for a more remote setting, you are sure to find a place to suit your style.
Lahaina Side
If you’re looking for action, easy access, glistening white sand beaches, and endless sunshine, the Lahaina shoreline is sure to float your boat. Lahaina literally translates to “land of the relentless sun”. Finding a beach to sunbathe couldn’t be easier. Drive along the coast until you see a beach that you like, stop and enjoy. If you are single, be sure to stroll around Kaanapali and Airport Beach, you may meet the love of your life. Don’t forget your Locals sandals. The sand can be especially hot in the summer!
Kehei side
The Kehei coast offers the same in terms of sun and accessibility. Makena Beach is easily found on the map. If you’re up for an adventure head past the main beach (left at the end of the beach and over the little hill), a land of fun in the sun awaits. This beach is not for everyone. If you want to throw on your suit and play Frisbee or tan your “white parts”, these optional beachwear will be a blast. Sundays are like a mini festival with live drums and dancing. Dolphins have been known to pass by from time to time.
Hana’s side
The Hana side of the island is known for its heavier rains and lush scenery. Do not be fooled. There is still plenty of sunshine for everyone. For a personal oasis away from the main crowds and attractions, visit Red Sands Beach. Free spirits can soar in this quiet little cove hidden from everything on the outskirts of Hana Town. Just ask for directions at the Hasegawa General Store. Pick up some food along the way at one of the many local stalls. Local organic fruits are strong with “Mana”, the sacred force of the universe. The red sand beach is as beautiful as it is rich in Hawaiian history. The protected pools are fed by springs of cold and pristine water. These brackish pools were sacred to Hawaiians. Hawaiian women would travel to this hidden sanctuary to give birth in water. Clothing is optional on this beach. The Red Sands hike is not for everyone. It is steep and a little scary, but if you are a good adventurer it is nothing more than a little hike with a sweet treat at the end. Remember to take out what you brought and, tempting as it is, leave the beautiful red sand where it is. It is considered taboo to take it with you.
Secret tanning spot
The real treasure awaits right after Hana. Drive approximately 1/3 mile past mile marker 39 on the Pi’ilani Highway. There will be a white bridge with Alelele written on the side. Here you will notice several trails moving inland towards Alelele Falls. Technically, this area is also within Haleakala National Park, but most people spend their time in the overcrowded area of ’Ohe’o Gulch and never visit this part of the park. Alelele Stream is easy to find, and it’s about a 10 minute walk down the trail (and creek bed) to get to this waterfall. There is a checkout on the makai side of the road that leads to a landing where you can park your car. You may have to jump a bit and / or cross the creek, but keep heading towards the valley wall where the waterfall is. This waterfall is very beautiful and hardly anyone knows that it is here. As is typical with many waterfalls on Maui, in summer it may not flow. If the weather has been especially dry you can probably assume the same for the falls and you may want to skip this spot. It is traditional to leave a Pohaku (Hawaiian offering to the ancestors made by wrapping a lava rock in a Ti sheet). You will see them on the way to the falls.
Tips for browning
On your quest for sun and endless fun on Maui, don’t forget to take care of that beautiful golden skin. Here are 5 essential tips that all the locals know about.
1) Even darker skin can burn, so limit your time in the sun. Only use a tanning accelerator like Maui Babe Browning Lotion if you are an experienced tanner and know your limits.
2) Be careful when choosing your sunscreen, most brands wash off or clog your pores (causing the dreaded tourist rash). Choose a breathable waterproof brand.

4) Always rinse off the salt water as it dries the skin, resulting in wrinkled, leather-like skin.
