Corian – So Your Expensive Countertop Is Broken? do not panic

Any time you spend a lot of money on something only to have it break, it usually makes you nervous. Well, if it’s a solid surface countertop, then there’s no reason to panic.

One of the big selling points of solid surface countertops is the fact that they can be repaired if they’re scratched, cracked, chipped, burned, or anything else. As long as your countertop hasn’t turned into a pile of dust or confetti, it can be repaired.

Every once in a while, I come across a post on some DIY forum or message board and people are posting answers about repairing solid surface countertops. They say how you can fix a crack with super glue or some fantastic new resin that you can just pour over the crack and then sand it down and then it’s fixed. Well that’s just not true.

Aside from simply removing scratches and a few stains, there is no such thing as a homeowner doing a real, legitimate, invisible, beautiful repair on their own solid surface countertop. It just won’t happen. That is a great myth that can be broken in the blink of an eye. Just ask anyone unlucky enough to follow this advice. Sure, maybe the magic potion they poured into the crack filled it in, and sure, once they sanded it down after using the magic potion, the crack was no longer felt when you rubbed your finger over it, but what did it look like? In a word, horrible.

In case it doesn’t look horrible at first, just wait, it will. It will start to change color, usually getting darker. So if you had a crack in a white countertop and fixed it yourself, it won’t take long and it will start to turn black. Imagine how proud he would be of his practical work then. Your once gorgeous countertops now look like something you salvaged from some old hotel or something. Gross!

The good news is that even if you are not qualified to repair your own countertop, there are qualified people.
