How to prevent your HHO hydrogen generator from freezing
Thinking of building and installing an HHO kit but live in northern climates where it freezes? Well, there are a few things you can do when it gets below freezing. There are many well tested HHO mixes that have a VERY LOW freezing temperature that will keep you from freezing.
The mixture that you put into your HHO generator is called an electrolyte. For hot climates, a standard HHO electrolyte is fine since it won’t freeze, but once you’re in the winter wonderland, you’ll need to use a special mix so it won’t freeze. Don’t get me wrong, it’s fine to let it freeze as long as its container doesn’t explode, but its fuel consumption will drop and it will be less efficient. If you build it correctly (or buy the correct HHO product), it won’t affect the generator. There are plenty of HHO electrolytes you can use, but the mix here works VERY well and won’t freeze (unless you live in a climate where it’s -60F).
Here are the ingredients:
White vinegar
baking soda
Isopropyl alcohol
Hydrogen peroxide
Mix 3 tablespoons of soda and two ounces of vinegar in a pan. These will react and produce ascetic acid and sodium acetate (this is used to clear airport runways). This will bubble when it reacts.
3 cups of rainwater and heat (or use snow melt) then add the above solution.
stir until dissolved. let’s cool down
Add 1 cup of isopropyl alcohol and mix
Add two capfuls of hydrogen peroxide.
Now to test… Simply drop a 9 volt battery into the solution and the battery should bubble up creating HHO gas.
