The Algarve is famous for its excellent food and excellent wines. The best place to go if you want to learn more about the people and culture is the market. There are plenty of food festivals, flea markets, gypsy markets and weekly markets in the Algarve. Locals can choose from a wide variety of fresh food, fish, coffee, beer and traditional drinks. If you want to experience the true taste of Algarve food, going to the local market is a must.

Quarteira and Armação de Pêra was one of the best markets in the Algarve. In 2007, a public capital company decided to boost local commerce and make this place more attractive to customers. The market was modernized and opening hours were extended. Here you can find fresh fish, food and vegetables, as well as flowers and local products.

Loulé and Quarteira are the largest and most well-known markets in the region. The first is a huge gypsy market open every Saturday. People from all over the Algarve come here to buy fresh produce and local specialities. Quarteira offers the best fish, fruits and vegetables in the region. Many local tour companies organize trips to this place. There are several restaurants and bars in the area. In addition to food, patrons can shop for furniture, garden items, antiques, and appliances.

The Helisiq stand has been offering snails of all sizes for over two decades. Here you will also find local cheeses, sausages and smoked sausage-type products. For fresh fish and seafood, go to the old market in Lagos. The place has been completely rebuilt and offers panoramic views from the rooftop. Animal lovers can attend the charity sale organized by the Lagos Animal Protection Society every second Saturday of each month.

If you are interested in buying souvenirs and crafts in wicker, wood and ceramics, come to the gypsy market of Monchique. The best buys are cut-price ceramics, cotton goods and traditional home decorations. Those who live in Sagres can go to the municipal market for fresh vegetables, kitchenware, footwear, textiles and clothing. On the first Friday of each month, the locals bring out all kinds of crafts and gastronomic specialties.

The Portimao market attracts customers from all over the Algarve. Here you will find local farmers selling homemade sweets, cheeses, meats, honey, freshly baked bread and wines. There are also several non-food outlets offering flowers, clothing, and shoes. Arrive early in the morning to find the best fish!
