Selecting a power tool as a Christmas gift

Cordless drills are a universal gift for home craftsmen and craftsmen, especially at Christmas. The convenience and safety provided by a drill that works without a cord connecting it to an outlet means that these tools are gifts that will be used and appreciated. Deciding on the right make and model is a matter of looking at the features.

Battery voltage controls the amount of torque available. Torque, or twisting power, limits the length of screws that can be driven and the strength of the material in which holes can be drilled. However, a higher voltage means a much higher weight. Voltages range from nine volts to monster 24 volts.

The milliamp hour (mAh) rating is an indicator of how long a battery will hold a charge. Higher ratings mean longer operation. In high drain devices such as power tools, a high mAh rating is a must.

US chuck size is 3/8″ or 1/2″. Most bits are made to fit 3/8″ chucks, but some very large ones are made just for the 1/2″ variety. For a new drill for a homeowner or handyman, 3/8″ is a safe bet, but if the drill is a replacement, buy a model with a chuck that will fit the old bits.

Reversible motors allow things to be turned both clockwise and counterclockwise. This is extremely convenient not only for pulling drill bits out of deep holes, but also for unscrewing screws.

Dual speed motors typically have settings of 300 rpm for screwdriving and 800 rpm for drilling holes. Only the least expensive models are restricted to a single speed.

Adjustable clutches prevent stripping of bolts once they are tightened. When a screw begins to build back pressure, the clutch disengages.

Smart chargers allow batteries to charge quickly at first, then slowly as the battery approaches capacity.

Additional batteries mean a fully charged unit is always available, so work doesn’t stop when power runs out.

The weight of the drill is usually related to the voltage of the batteries. If the tool is too heavy to maneuver, particularly overhead or in difficult areas, its usefulness is diminished.

Balance is closely related to weight. If the mass distribution makes it difficult to handle the tool, it would be best to choose a different model.

Choosing the right tool for the job is just as important when shopping for a gift as it is when selecting the tools themselves. The weight and balance of power tools should be matched to the musculature and experience level of the user. It may be necessary to trade some ability to hold a load for lighter weight for the sake of usability. Care in selection means cordless drills will be deeply appreciated functional gifts.
