What is a dental bridge and who needs it?

Dental bridges, as the name suggests, bridge the gap between missing teeth. They consist of two or more crowns for teeth on one or the other side of the hole; the abutment teeth, which are the anchor teeth; and tooth/false teeth between them. Pontics, as these false teeth are called, can be made of gold, porcelain, alloy or a mixture of these materials. Implants or natural teeth support these devices.

The process of getting a dental bridge

At the first visit for such a device, the dentist prepares the abutment teeth. He recontours these teeth by filing away some of the enamel to provide space to place a crown on them. He then takes impressions of the teeth to serve as a mold that will be used by the dental lab to make the bridge, crowns, and pontic. In the meantime, he will create a temporary bridge to protect the teeth and gums that are left exposed during the time the final version is being made.

At the second visit, the dentist will remove the temporary version and place the new metal/porcelain bridge, which will be examined and adjusted as necessary to fit properly. This may require multiple visits to check the bite and fit of the metal framework. This really depends on the case of each patient. If it is a fixed dental bridge, your dentist may place temporary cement in it for a few weeks to ensure a proper fit. Then after a few weeks the device is permanently cemented.

The cost of dental bridges

When it comes to this type of device, the costs involved depend on the type of bridge chosen and the part of the country where the procedure is carried out.

The longevity of dental bridges

These devices can be used for five to fifteen years, and sometimes even longer. It is expected to have a lifespan of more than 10 years when the patient practices good oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist.

Eating with a dental bridge

When missing teeth are replaced with a dental bridge, it makes eating much easier. However, if the person is not yet used to using the device, eating small pieces of soft food may help.

Talking with a dental bridge

It is difficult to speak clearly when you have missing teeth. On the other hand, wearing a dental bridge with the anterior teeth well connected allows the person to speak more clearly.

Caring for a dental bridge

It is essential that the remaining teeth remain healthy and strong, as the result of the bridge (depending on the type chosen) is based on the foundation provided by the surrounding teeth. Practicing good oral care that includes brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing and using mouthwash every day prevents cavities and gum disease that can cause tooth loss.

It would be helpful to ask a dentist/dental hygienist for advice on how to brush and floss correctly. Regular cleaning will allow the dentist to diagnose problems early on, when they are easier to treat. It is also important to choose a well-balanced diet for proper nutrition.
