What kind of books do children love?

One experience all your children should have is reading them a bedtime story. This is a relaxing experience that will help them calm down and fall asleep, but it is also a key ingredient in their mental development as they begin to learn abstract thoughts. This means, on a simple level, imagining things and creating images in their heads. TV can’t do this, as everything feeds into them, leaving your brain with nothing to do but watch and absorb.

So when it’s time for bed, what kind of stories should you tell your kids? Gripping suspense thrillers? Gothic horrors?

fairy tales

One of the best places to start is with a fairy tale. These stories have proven over the years to be great places for children to start their journey into more complex stories as they progress from baby books. Stories like Cinderella, Snow White, The Princess and the Pea, and The Wizard of Oz are all fantasy stories that have a wide range of dragons, maidens, heroes, and villains that are perfect for teaching your child about good and evil and for preparing their heads to understand more advanced stories as they grow older.

children’s adventure

Books by authors like Enid Blyton or JK Rowling are great bedtime stories for children, offering young children a relatable adventure as the protagonists are around their age. Both Harry and the children in Enid Blyton’s stories have adventures that range from fanciful and elaborate to simple and noble, but the main point is that your children will enjoy imagining that they are taking part.

abstract books

Roald Dahl offers the perfect examples of children’s books in this type of category. His stories offer strange and magical tales that often involve children and are often accompanied by beautiful illustrations as well. His environment tends to be a familiar environment that most kids can relate to, which helps with their relationship to the story. Puzzle books and pop-up books also make great abstract stories come to life.

The overriding theme when it comes to these children’s stories is that they all help your child relate to the story. This is normally done by having a child as the main character, but then it takes him on a fantastic journey. Encouraging the development of your child’s imagination will be very useful for future learning.
