What to do in Athens

There are a lot of places to go and things to do in the city of Athens, Greece. You should have no problem filling your time in Athens with wonderful memories and beautiful snapshots. Here are some places to start:

Make sure to see the Acropolis and the Parthenon. This is known as one of the many wonders of the ancient world. It is not only a great place to spend your time, but also your money. There is a ticket that you can buy that also allows you to see the other important archaeological sites.

Traveling abroad is somewhat expensive, even if you are on a prudent budget, but that doesn’t mean you should limit your sightseeing to a minimum.

In an ideal world, you will make time to visit the Theater of Herod Atticus, the Theater of Dionysus and the Ancient Agoraare during your vacation in Athens as each of these places will have its own merits that you will want to discover.

Make sure you set aside enough time to explore these areas so you don’t feel too rushed.

The National Archaeological Museum of Athens is a short walk from Syntagma. It will likely take you half an hour to an hour to comfortably complete the hike. It may seem like a long walk, but when you get there, you will find that it was well worth your effort to get there.

There is no better museum on the planet to see a collection of ancient Greek sculptures. Jewelry, ceramics and items found in a shipwreck off the island of Antikithera are also on display in the National Archaeological Museum.

Even if you are not a history buff or if you are not interested in history, you will find it difficult not to find everything fascinating about the National Archaeological Museum.

For those of you who don’t have enough history already, you’ll probably want to camp here and never leave. There is such a wide variety of exhibits at the National Archaeological Museum that you can’t help but get carried away and want to spend the whole day there.

Regardless of how you feel about shopping, no trip to Athens is complete without a visit to the Angora-Athens market. Regardless of your tastes and preferences for fish, meat and vegetables, you will find that the most likely place is the central market on Athinas street.

Make a stop at the market whenever it suits your day. Trucks are unloaded early in the morning and you can join most of the Athenian shoppers around noon.

During this time, you will feel like you are a native of Athens. Be sure to ask the locals about their favorite foods at this market. They shop here all the time and may point you in the direction of some foods and find that you won’t get a chance to try another time.

Even if it is something you are not entirely comfortable with, try trying new foods that you find in this market if you want to have a true Greek experience during your stay in Athens.

If you can, you can seriously consider taking some time to climb Mount Lycabettus. If you choose to push yourself, breathtaking views and exceptional coffee await. If you can’t do the hike but want to see the top of the mountain, you can take a train near the top of the mountain. Many visitors say that walking up the mountain is a lot of fun, even if the climb was difficult.

You will likely walk through a neighborhood or two on your way up the mountain. Each of these small neighborhoods has its own inhabitants with aspects of their Greek culture that are unique to their neighborhood.

If you have been fascinated by Greek customs up to this point in your trip, you may want to consider spending more time on your walk on the wonderful Mount Lycabettus.
