One of the hardest things to do when planning your special day is to spend hours scouring the internet looking for a unique, elegant and unused venue for your wedding. I’ve spent the last two days searching for that perfect oh so elusive spot. I’m going to save you all the trouble I went through and compile all the places I found through obscure Google searches and message boards and put these locations in one place. Welcome to your one stop shop for unique wedding venues throughout Maryland. For your convincing, I have put them in genres like “Castle Theme”, “Relax Theme” etc. so if you’re really in a knot, you don’t have to spend all day searching when you could find the perfect pair of shoes to match your dress. Here we go:

Castles:

Cloisters Castle – Commissioned and completed over a span of twenty-seven years, this private home screams uniqueness. From the exterior built with gray and gold Butler stone, gables taken from a medieval house in France, and medallions from a 16th-century Venetian home, it’s a brilliant piece of architecture. Located in Luthersville, MD, this place is surrounded by sixty acres of trees and a beautiful garden. Its interiors are furnished with authentic medieval pieces and antique furniture. The fireplace was even commissioned to be built from an ancient chest carved with Renaissance figures. Famously, it was the site of actor Will Smith and Jada Pinkett’s wedding in 1998, but that hasn’t been able to tarnish the enchanting and unforgettable atmosphere the house creates. Both outside and inside can be available and there is only one event per day, allowing your day to be uninterrupted in its magic. The rental rate allows for up to ten hours on the ground and more time can be negotiated through the contract for an additional hour rate. The venue seats 175 guests comfortably, and as a bonus, the staff acts as your wedding planner, directing preparation, timing, and valet parking.

Maryvale Castle: Functioning as a preparatory school, Maryvale Castle boasts huge grounds complete with a wedding chapel if the bride doesn’t fancy walking down the much talked about grand spiral staircase. Built in 1917 in Greenspring Valley, MD, this treasure houses an oak-panelled great room, a sunroom, and a bridal suite. A stone manor house that stretches in both directions takes its influence from Warwick Castle in England with its gothic arched windows, coach house and imposing gray towers. A rental agreement includes four hours of time which includes rehearsal time and full use of the property. However, because it is still an operating school, weekday hours are more restricted than weekends. With an indoor guest capacity of 125 and an outdoor capacity of 200, this venue is worth visiting strictly by appointment only.

Mansions:

Montpelier Mansion – A mansion straight out of a Jane Austin piece, this brick Georgian structure sits on seventy acres of land flanked by dogwood trees. Built between 1781 and 1785, this national historic landmark is open to the public for tours and festivities and once housed George Washington and his wife Martha. It is also home to a rare 18th century summer house that is very well preserved. Maximum capacity inside and outside is on the small side, eighty-five guests total, but the unique floor plan with crown molding and period furnishings lends an opulent, antique charm of its own. For people who have a wedding on Sunday, this place is not for you, since they do not allow rentals on Sundays, however, having free rein in this delicate place is well worth the change of date. Located in Laurell, this mansion exudes country elegance akin to many a bride’s favorite novel, complete with a circular stone driveway.

Glenveiw Mansion: Located in Rockville, MD as part of a Rockville Civic Center Park, the house is in the neoclassical tradition with sporting pillars and an infinite number of beautiful black shuttered windows that overlook the lawn. The dining room is veiled in class and luxury, as are its floor-to-ceiling dark-paneled wood walls and long oval windows. The conservatory sparkles with antique chandeliers whose light bounces off the green Italian marble floors. The rest of the house is touched with intricate details from the period in which it was first built and houses a number of unique turn-of-the-century antiques that are sure to make any wedding memorable. The maximum capacity for this venue is 225 guests and the amount charged allows for two hours of setup and one hour of cleaning. Some strict drawbacks for prospective brides are no sit-down dining, no on-site cooking, and no red-tinted beverages of any kind.

Stronghold Mansion: Atop Sugarloaf Mountain in Dickerson, MD, the all-white mansion with pillars and trellis widow’s peak lends itself to the country simplicity that surrounds it. Straight gardens emphasize the well-designed rock walls that slither around the property and are home to a variety of elegant yet simple flora and fauna normally seen in a country garden. The shimmering circular lake at the side of the house has large willow trees that surround it and form a path to the house itself where the interior architecture blends with the exterior in its refined gentile décor. A standard contract allows 7 hours and includes installation and cleaning times. . Additional hours can be negotiated. The maximum number of guests attending is 200 and the rental includes a 40 by 57 inch tent over the patio and can be added to encompass the lake area as well. Parking is limited as there are only 85 spots available and clearly marked by the owners, small shuttle buses are allowed.

Liriodendron Mansion – An ornate 1898 masterpiece surrounded by flower-filled landscaping, this former summer home in Harford County leaves nothing unchecked in your imagination. Whether it’s the old-world Greek architecture built around intricate carvings, flower vases and stone pillars, or the wisteria vines that form a canopy over the porch for an otherworldly rehearsal dinner, the home is awash in magic of its own. . The Palladian-style mansion reminds guests of a fairyland surrounded by woods and fountains with a variety of romantic stone sculptures throughout the grounds. Maximum capacity is 150 guests outside, 100 guests inside with seating, and there is plenty of guest parking. The renter has the option of 6.5 hours during the week, while on weekends they must choose between rental hours and holiday hours in a wide selection of options. Wedding rehearsals are an additional fee, as are table and chair rental fees, but this is no different than most other venues.

Tudor Place: This home of Martha Washington’s late granddaughter, Martha Custic Peter, is steeped in rich history and warm, comfortable elegance. The house itself was built in 1805 by Dr. William Thorton, who was also famous for building the first capital of the United States and the Octagon building in Washington, DC. Inside the house are more than a hundred items belonging to George and Martha Washington, all of which have been documented in an archived collection of letters, diaries, books and photographs. Regarding the guests, the mansion can accommodate up to 35 guests for a wedding ceremony and for parties of more than 35 guests they must pay extra. This place is for ceremonies only and the reservation includes a block of hours for that ceremony. They also have your own photography on view for a fee.

Ceresville Mansion – With a variety of ceremony options to suit any bride, as well as an in-house consultant to coordinate everything seamlessly, this mansion boasts superior services. Whether the perfect wedding uses its white Grecian pergola surrounded by flowering dogwoods, or the ivy-clad terrace backlit with candles shimmering over the lily pad, it will be one to remember. The black and white Cape Cod-style home was built in 1888 alongside rivers, hillsides and a ten-acre meadow also open for events. Much of the original architecture, as well as the antique furnishings and fireplace, remain the same as they were in 1888. The laid-back romantic space is located in Fredrick, MD, just minutes from Baltimore. The land is dotted with greenery and horses, while the city’s exciting nightlife and history are close at hand. Enjoy a leisurely day as all guests settle into places to stay after the reception and perhaps even stay past the ceremony for a honeymoon to enjoy a hot air balloon ride or carriage tour. From start to finish of your extraordinary day, Slade’s takes care of everything from “his and her” massages, hair and makeup sessions to the bridal party, as well as lunches and teas. Indoor buffet seating is for 100 guests, while larger parties can be accommodated with tents for seated dining and dancing for up to 150.
